Sixteen

Madam Tutu’s book was dense. Jack tried reading it with me, but it meant very little to him, so he switched to a book on his tablet and let me study. I read until my eyes were so heavy the words started to blur. I nodded off at one point, stirring when Jack took the book from my hands and placed it on the nightstand.

“I should finish that chapter,” I said sleepily.

“You’re done.” He flicked off the lamp and slipped his arm around my back.

“I was going to let you romance me,” I complained.

His lips curved against my forehead as we got comfortable. “We can romance each other in the morning.”

I rested my hand on his chest, the familiar beat of his heart lulling me. “I’m not sure I understand what the book is telling me to do.”

“You’ll figure it out.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because you’re you.”

That was the last thing I heard before sleep claimed me. The darkness was a welcome blanket, and I was happy for respite. It didn’t last long, however. At some point, the darkness faded away and I found myself in unfamiliar surroundings.

“What’s this?” I asked as I studied what could only be described as a cave.

“This would be the hell you relegated me to,” a voice hissed, causing me to swivel quickly. There, behind me, stood Sybil. She looked as if she was ready to start throwing punches. Her hair and eyes were wild, her chest heaving.

“You again,” I murmured, shaking my head. “Why do you keep bugging me? Can’t you just let me sleep?”

“No.” Sybil’s eyes flashed with fury. “You put me here. You need to get me out.”

“Yeah, that’s not going to happen.” I glanced around. “Why are you in a cave?”

“It’s a hell dimension. Everything here is hellish.”

“Oh, stop being so dramatic,” Harley drawled as she strode into the cave. She’d changed her outfit and now looked to be dressed in some weird ensemble consisting of animal hides. I’d never seen anything like it outside of a movie … and a Flintstones episode. Oddly enough, the colors complemented each other, and because she was Harley, she still managed to look fashionable.

“What in the … ?” My mouth dropped open.

“Do you like?” Harley struck a hilarious pose. “Your freaking great-great-great-grand monster totally ruined my outfit. I had to barter with the locals — they don’t speak English and my ancient Sumerian is rusty — and this is all they had. I’m not happy.”

“You’re really here?” I demanded. “I’m not making all of this up in my head?”

“Just out of curiosity, do you really think you would make up this outfit if you were dreaming?”

She had a point, but … . “I miss you.” The words escaped before I could think too hard about them. “So much. You have no idea.”

Harley’s expression softened. “You’re fine. You’re with Jack in Savannah. How bad could things be?”

“The ghosts are multiplying, women are going missing, and there’s some weird shadow thing terrorizing the ghost I need to talk to.
